Elastic Design

Here is an article about Elastic Design, i.e. designing web-pages than can be dynamically altered in size. The most obvious candidate for elasticity is text, of course.

It can be difficult to move from a static, pixel-based design approach to an elastic, relative method. Properly implemented, however, elastic design can be a viable option that enhances usability and accessibility without mandating design sacrifices.

Check out Wired News for an example of elastic text (top right).

Word of the Day: Serendipity

Serendipity: The faculty or phenomenon of making fortunate accidental discoveries

The word serendipity was formed by English author Horace Walpole (1717-1797) from Serendip (also Serendib), an old name for Sri Lanka, in reference to a Persian tale, The Three Princes of Serendip, whose heroes “discovered, quite unexpectedly, great and wonderful good in the most unlikely of situations, places and people.”

Selling at Zero Cost With Google

I just found an insightful article at MarketingProfs.com about the increasing importance of search engines in online shopping behavior, and how to adapt and capitalize on this trend. Search engines are becoming the main gateway to sales. And Google, with almost 80 per cent market share, is how most of your new customers at least get get to your website.

Google has become an ad hoc market “operating system” for architecting your information. This makes it possible as a merchant to simply tune your site to the Google algorithm and convert your thousands of dormant product pages into an enormous, energized sales force. Once unleashed, these product “experts” can be programmed to automatically hunt the Web for you, find only the most qualified customers, and—the best part—sell for free.

Most big retailers did not see this trend a few years ago, and did not optimize their web sites for search engines like Google. Their product catalogs are invisible for customers that use search engines to find the products they are looking for. This has created a strategic opportunity for smaller and more adaptive retailers that are able to use search engines as their sales force, at zero cost, while their main competitors are nowhere to be found.
